Paul McCartney collaborates with Peter Martins and Sara Mearns of NYC Ballet
Found this collaboration created in 2011 where legendary Paul McCartney composed the music for Ocean's Kingdom - choreography by Peter Martins and starring his favourite hand-picked star: The intense, glamorous and expansive principal ballerina Sara Mearns.
She is one of the 'it' dancers in the ballet world today. Her character is hard, strong, powerful, focused and determined. Lacking in the elegance of speech and communication. A raw edgy fearlessness to her. But her interpretations on stage are overwhelming, drawing you in, dancing as if her life depended on it, glamorous and intensely emotional. Sensitive and desperate, she has a powerful aura on stage that transcends to the tips of her fingers. She reminds me of what I love about the stage - it's a place where it feels home, where you can escape and communicate the way you want without judgment, without fear. She was hand-picked a age 19 to dance Odette by Peter Martins who saw in her potential that no one else previously saw. 'You either sink or swim' - and clearly Mearns has the hardened edginess that she fought and rose to the top.
